Lobley family

Members of the Lobley families living in the Ripon area of North Yorkshire.
This area covers, Grewelthorpe, Masham, Pateley Bridge, Kirkby Malzeard etc.

Research started February 2026. To be continued:-

‘Lob’ – meaning a wooded hillside, and ‘Ley’ – meaning a meadow. It is possible that the origin of the name ‘Lobley’ lies in North Yorkshire, to the west of Masham, near a hamlet called ‘Ilton cum Pott and at a place called ‘Lobley Hall’. Lobley Hall is a Grade 2 listed, ruined 17th Century farmhouse and was built on land called ‘Lobley’.

ANTHONY CRADDOCK LOBLEY Born 1856. Died 1898. He was imprisoned in Armley Jail for 5 years, but committed suicide and is buried in an unconsecrated grave in Armley. Son of John [cattle dealer] & “Elizabeth Craddock”. He was a woodman. Married in 1882 [1] Ann Cartman and In 1896 married [2] Ann Atkinson. of Bishop Thornton.

ANTHONY LOBLEY Miller of Galphay. Living at Millhouse. Found guilty of threatening behaviour in 1889 and sent to prison for 2 months hard labour. Previously [in 1886] he had been fined for assaulting a young woman.

DORIS LOBLEY Born 1916. Died Sep. 1992. Lived Mallaby House, Dallowgill.
EVELYN LOBLEY Died 1984 Masham. Living Ivy Dene, Masham.
GERTRUDE ANNIE LOBLEY Born 1888 Galphay. Dau of Anthony & Ann Cartman Grand-dau. of John Cartman of Kirkby Malzeard. Living Azerley in 1901. Married in 1908.
HANNAH LOBLEY Born 1848 Easingwold. Dau of John & Mary.
ISABEL JANE LOBLEY [nee Brown] Born 1905. Lived Kirkby Malzeard. Died 1999. Ripon. Married to Robert Harlow Lobley see below.

JOHN LOBLEY Born 1813 Crake. Married to Mary of Lincolnshire. Living Langthorpe near Ripon in 1851.

JOHN HENRY LOBLEY Born 1871 Whorlton. Son of William & Ann. In 1891 he was a mason in Saltburn.

ROBERT LOBLEY Born 1825 Preston under scar. Son of Thomas & Alice Craddock.A Lead miner.in 1868 when he Married Mary Wade from Masham. Living Middlesmoor [Summer Stone Lodge] in 1871.
ROBERT HARLOW WHEAS LOBLEY Born 1879 Sharow. Died 1946. Son of Anthony & Ann Cartman. Married in 1902 to Jane Isabella Wrathall Brown. Horseman on farm in Kirkby Malzeard.
ROBERT SIDNEY LOBLEY Born 1916 Dallowgill. Died 2004. Son of Sidney & Annie Burrill. Married to Doris. Brother of Lillian. Father of Geoff.

SIDNEY LOBLEY Born 1887 Galphay. Nephew of William Ashby of Dallowgill. Farmer & Gamekeeper in Carlsmoor in 1921. Married to Annie Burrill from Dallowgill.

THOMAS ARTHUR LOBLEY Born 1916. Died 1982 Harrogate. Married to Dorothy Brenda. Father of Ronald & David.
WILLIAM LOBLEY Born 1835 Wensley. Son of Thomas & Alice Craddock. In 1881 he was an ironstone miner. Married to Ann. In 1891 He was a pedlar of small wares in Saltburn with 2 sons Wm & John Henry.
WILLIAM LOBLEY Born 1844 Easingwold. Son. of John & Mary.
WILLIAM LOBLEY Born 1865 Whorlton. Died 1918. Son of William & Ann. In 1893 he married Phoebe Gibson. In 1911 he was a gardener in Saltburn. 3 children Harold [at sea]. William & Alice May.
{Harold was killed in S.S.Lancastria in 1940 during WW2. Comm. on Dunkirk memorial.}
