“Farmer Harry,” as he was often called, was a real son of the soil, and quite a character in his way. He was born at Hunton, and in his younger days was Mr James Watson’s farmer, at the time when the stable sheltered such famous horses as Plaudit, Strathconan, Rose, and other famous thoroughbreds. He was also with Mr Holdsworth, on the Brough estate of Sir John Lawson, Bart. Subsequently he became the landlord of the Good Intent public house, near the Old Bridge, and afterwards of the Red Lion, in the Market-place. He did not stay at the latter place.
