Robbery in Grewelthorpe 1849

Reported in the Yorkshire Gazette 1st December 1849.

A daring robbery was committed at the house of Mrs Blackburn, grocer of Grewelthorpe on Tuesday evening or early Wednesday morning. The depredators entered by a back window into the dairy, from thence proceeded into the house, where they had seemingly examined drawers, closets and other places. They had taken a watch from behind a balk. [A balk is a timber beam] Also 5 silver teaspoons marked MS and 1 silver tablespoon marked JS. They had also entered the shop where they had obtained a £5 note, between £2-£3 worth of silver, a bag containing 40 farthings and 3 pairs of women’s shoes, together with tobacco, eatables and various other things. The offenders have not yet been brought to justice.

ANN BLACKBURN. was born in C1797 in Clifton, York. On 1851 census she was a widow, a grocer living in Grewelthorpe with her unmarried daughter. Jane Blackburn. age 40.
