Performing arts in Grewelthorpe.
At one time Grewelthorpe people took part in choral singing, country dancing and amateur dramatics. They performed for other villagers and also took part in competitions with great success.
At the choral festival at York in the country dance section Grewelthorpe school entered two teams.
‘A’ team for under 10’s. ‘B’ team for over 10’s.
The senior team secured a 1st class certificate scoring 86/100 marks.
The junior team got a third class certificate with 72/100 marks.
They travelled by secial bus to York and in the morning they visited the Rowntrees Chocolate factory. Each visitor received a souvenir box of chocolates. They also visited the Minster, the wells and the river and shops. Meals were taken at Border Cafe.
Fancy dress dances were held in school on 2 days organised by the PCC.
On the children’s night the judge was Miss Crompton of Azerley Chase. The winner of the girls prettiest was Mary Jowett. as the gleaner.
March 8th & 15th 1947. There were 2 concerts produced by Miss Hilary Goss and presented by the Grewelthorpe players in Grewelthorpe school. They were in aid of the Village Hall fund. £13.12s.0d was raised for the fund.
Later in 1947 the Grewelthorpe Players again performed in Kirkby Malzeard village hall. Plays, songs, duets etc. produced by Hilary Goss. After the show the artists were entertained to supper by lady members of the committee. The proceeds to the village hall fund.
The Grewelthorpe choral society gave a concert in Kirkby Malzeard under the leadership of Mr. Hill of Ripon. Miss Jowett accompanied the singers. D.Geldart sang a solo.
Grewelthorpe Folk Dancers. The Grewelthorpe evening Institute which comprises the choral music and ladies dancing and keep fit class held a social evening in Grewelthorpe school to close the session. The members of both classes entertained their friends. The keep fit class under their teacher Mr. N. Ainsley. of Ripon did five dances in Scandinavian costume.
With Mr. H.W.Hill. as their conductor the Choral Music class sang several songs and glees including “The Dance” & “The Lullaby.” from “Songs from the Bavarian Highlands.” by Elgar and “Bless this House.” arranged for four parts. “Ah in the April Evening.” by Robertson and “Long Day Closes.” by Sullivan. Supper was served by the ladies and the rest of the evening was spent in games and dancing. “Mrs White.* [Ripon] and Miss Jowett. [Grewelthorpe} were the painists for the choral music and dancing.
The Grewelthorpe Choral Society. conducted by Mr. Hill. gave a concert in the Methodist Chapel. Songs, anthems & solos were performed. Mrs. Gaunt & Miss A.Ashby. sang a duet. Miss Cole. sang a solo. Miss A.R.Jowett. was at the organ.
Grewelthorpe Choral Society. under the conductorship of Mr. A.T.Forrest. of Ripon was awarded a 2nd class certificate in the mixed classes at the Choral Festival in York.
Lazenby & Pannal, Harrogate were 1st & 2nd and Grewelthorpe came 3rd.
Two folk dancing displays were arranged by Miss Jowett for the afternoon entertainment at a Churchyard fund Garden Fete held in the Vicarage Grounds Grewelthorpe. Eight schoolgirls and the WI folk dancing team performed with Mrs F. I’Anson. as accompanist on her piano accordion. The Fete raised over £60 for church funds.

In 1962 Grewelthorpe Drama Group gave a repeat performance of “Love’s a luxury” They had previously produced this play in 1956 and they were now repeating it in response to public requests. This was the groups response to the Masham Town Hall stage reconstruction appeal, and the performance was given in Masham Town Hall. The play was produced by Gareth Jones.

Grewelthorpe Girl Guides make a guard of honour for a wedding in 1926.
