Performing arts in Grewelthorpe.
At one time Grewelthorpe people took part in choral singing, country dancing and amateur dramatics. They performed for other villagers and also took part in competitions with great success.
APRIL 1928.
At the choral festival at York in the country dance section Grewelthorpe school entered two teams.
‘A’ team for under 10’s. ‘B’ team for over 10’s.
The senior team secured a 1st class certificate scoring 86/100 marks.
The junior team got a third class certificate with 72/100 marks.
They travelled by secial bus to York and in the morning they visited the Rowntrees Chocolate factory. Each visitor received a souvenir box of chocolates. They also visited the Minster, the wells and the river and shops. Meals were taken at Border Cafe.
JANUARY 1930.
Fancy dress dances were held in school on 2 days organised by the PCC.
On the children’s night the judge was Miss Crompton of Azerley Chase. The winner of the girls prettiest was Mary Jowett. as the gleaner.


APRIL 1949.
Grewelthorpe Folk Dancers. The Grewelthorpe evening Institute which comprises the choral music and ladies dancing and keep fit class held a social evening in Grewelthorpe school to close the session. The members of both classes entertained their friends. The keep fit class under their teacher Mr. N. Ainsley. of Ripon did five dances in Scandinavian costume.
With Mr. H.W.Hill. as their conductor the Choral Music class sang several songs and glees including “The Dance” & “The Lullaby.” from “Songs from the Bavarian Highlands.” by Elgar and “Bless this House.” arranged for four parts. “Ah in the April Evening.” by Robertson and “Long Day Closes.” by Sullivan. Supper was served by the ladies and the rest of the evening was spent in games and dancing. “Mrs White.* [Ripon] and Miss Jowett. [Grewelthorpe} were the painists for the choral music and dancing.
APRIL 1951.
Grewelthorpe Choral Society. under the conductorship of Mr. A.T.Forrest. of Ripon was awarded a 2nd class certificate in the mixed classes at the Choral Festival in York.
Lazenby & Pannal, Harrogate were 1st & 2nd and Grewelthorpe came 3rd.
